LITERATE WORD GUIDE
WORDS OFTEN RELATING TO GOOD CHARACTERS
Amicable Synonyms: Friendly, cordial, agreeable, sympathetic Official Definition: adj. characterized by or showing goodwill; friendly; peaceable: When to use: You could use this to describe an action when your character is greeting a friend, receiving a gift, or just to describe a good-natured character in general.
Eloquent Synonyms: Articulate, well expressed, persuasive, Official Definition: adj. having or exercising the power of fluent, forceful, and appropriate speech: When to use: A good way to use this term is to describe how a character talks. Especially they are trying to persuade someone of something or giving a new character a formal greeting.
Magnanimous Synonyms: Generous, Noble, Kindhearted Official Definition: adj. Generous in forgiving an insult or injury; free from petty resentfulness or vindictiveness When to use: Describing a character that is a good leader, or has just committed a generous act to you.
NEUTRAL POSITIVE WORDS [By these I mean words that are not necessarily aligned with how nice or evil a character is, but are usually traits that would benefit a character. Such as intelligence, strength, beauty, etc.]
Equanimity Synonyms: Composure, poise, Official Definition: n. Mental or emotional stability or composure, especially under tension or strain; calmness; equilibrium. When to use: Describing a character who might be under pressure, but is not letting the strain of the situation cloud their judgment.
Ebullient Synonyms: Enthusiastic, passionate Official Definition: adj. Overflowing with fervor, enthusiasm, or excitement; high-spirited: When to use: This is a good term to use when describing children. Or any adult character when they are looking forward to something. Whether it be going leaving the den for the first time, or killing your enemies in battle.
Perspicacious Synonyms: Perceptive, shrewd, wise Official Definition: adj. having keen mental perception and understanding; discerning: When to use: When describing a character that is very intelligent and has lots of life experience. Or who has just figured out something that the rest of the group had missed.
Trenchant Synonyms: incisive, cutting, acerbic Official Definition: adj. incisive or keen, as language or a person; caustic; cutting: trenchant wit. When to use: A good word to describe an insult or an observation. Or the character who made it.
WORDS OFTEN RELATING TO EVIL CHARACTERS
Cantankerous Synonyms: Bad tempered, irritable, argumentative, Official Definition:adj. disagreeable to deal with; contentious; peevish: When to use: Can be well used around a character who isn’t really used to being around others. Or when another character is trying to make them do something they don’t want to do.
Furtive Synonyms: Secretive, sly, shifty, Official Definition: adj. Taken, done, used, etc., surreptitiously or by stealth; secret When to use: When your character is trying not to be seen. Or to describe an action done stealthily. Ex “Alexander glanced furtively in the direction of the pretty girl to his right. Hopefully she didn’t notice.”
Gauche Synonyms: Uncouth, vulgar, rude Official Definition: adj. lacking social grace, sensitivity, or acuteness; awkward; crude; tactless: When to use: Any character who is rude, basically. Or who has a sharp tongue that they can’t quite control. But this type of ill-mannerism is not usually intentional.
Malevolent Synonyms: enmity, unkindness Official Definition: adj. ill-willed When to use: Can be used to describe the actions of a character that are evil. ex "A malevolent smile spread across Circe's lips as he raise his paw to crush the skull of the child who cowered below him."
WORDS TO USE WHEN DESCRIBING A FIGHT
Now, this might seem obvious, but lots of people have trouble describing fight scenes. So I thought I’d put in a few good words, along with an example of how to use them.
Ascendancy Synonyms: Dominance, upper-hand, control, advantage, authority, command, influence, Official Definition: n. domination When to use: Almost anywhere In a battle. Ex “Kurenai would not let Giro’s speed threaten her ascendancy of the situation.”
Aquiline Synonyms: Hooked, curved Official Definition: adj. (of the nose) shaped like an eagle's beak; hooked. When to use: This is an especially good word to use if you have an owl or gryphon character Ex “Seryette’s aquiline beak plunged deep into the warm flesh of the enemy lion.” being as it pertains mostly to beaks. However, it could also be used to describe hooked claws, fangs, or spikes.
Capitulate Synonyms: Surrender, give in, submit Official Definition:v: to give up resistance. When to use:When your character loses. It could be anywhere from a small argument, losing the fight to stay awake, or dying. Ex “Lyroc eventually capitulated under Werith’s unrelenting blows, and rolled onto the muddy ground in submission.”
Miasma Synonyms: Pollution, stench Official Definition: n. a dangerous, foreboding, or deathlike influence or atmosphere. When to use: The quiet before the storm. This is a great word to use when describing the nervous anticipation before something like a battle. “Hector could taste the thick miasma in the air as he stared out at the surrounding trees, waiting for the enemy forces to reveal themselves.”
